Sydney Harbour Opera House and Bridge In Australia

The two famous icons of Sydney Harbour, Australia. First, on the left, is the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is a 1,149 foot steel arch bridge that was built and completed in 1932. It measures in at 440 feet tall, making it the tallest steel arch bridge in the world. Second, on the right, is the Sydney Opera House. Construction began on the performing arts centre in 1963 and was completed in 1973. Today, the opera house now has the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most well known and distinct buildings in the world.

Times Square, New York

A view of iconic Times Square, which intersects Midtown Manhattan at 7th Avenue and Broadway. From the 1800s to 1904, this important crossroad was known as Longacre Square. The square was renamed to Times Square after the New York Times skyscraper opened here on April 8, 1904. Over the next century, Times Square has been associated with celebrities, depression and danger, illegal activities, and commercial growth. Today, Times Square is a world famous location for tourists, Broadway theater shows, hotels, restaurants, and electric advertisements. On New Years Eve, approximately 1 million people crowd Times Square to celebrate the new year and the dropping of the Times Square Ball.

Colosseum of Rome, Italy

In the center of Rome, Italy lies the landmark Roman Colosseum. The amphitheater was built in the 1st century A.D. during the rule of Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 A.D during the rule of Titus. The Colosseum at a point could fit 80,000 people and was used for such events as gladiator games, public executions, and mock sea battles. Over 500,000 people have been estimated to have died during Colosseum games, with another one million animals. The Colosseum has appeared in numerous films and is Rome's most popular tourist attraction.

View From Diamond Head on Oahu, Hawaii

This view of Honolulu, Hawaii and the Pacific is taken from 762 foot Diamond Head. Its English name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals for diamonds. The age of this volcanic crater is thought to be about 200,000 years. Waikiki can be seen in the center along with its resorts and beaches. Kapiolani Park can be seen in the foreground.

Ponte Vecchio Over The Arno River In Florence, Italy

Spanning the Arno River in Florence, Italy is the Ponte Vecchio. This medieval bridge dates back over 1000 years, but has been rebuilt and repaired many times, such as during the 1966 floods. During World War II, the bridge was spared by the Germans, unlike other bridges in Florence. The bridge has always hosted shop owners and merchants, who display their goods on tables to potential buyers.
