The amphitheater was built in the 1st century A.D. during the rule of Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 A.D during the rule of Titus. The Colosseum at a point could fit 80,000 people and was used for such events as gladiator games, public executions, and mock sea battles. Over 500,000 people have been estimated to have died during Colosseum games, with another one million animals. The Colosseum has appeared in numerous films and is Rome's most popular tourist attraction.
