California's Kern River flows about 165 miles through beautiful mountains and canyons. The Kern River starts near Mount Whitney at 14,505 in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and runs south towards the city of Bakersfield where it is diverted for irrigation, and meets with the California Aqueduct. The river is very popular for activities such as whitewater rafting and fly fishing. Recreational users should stay out of the water as the flow is very dangerous and has swept many people away.
