Cesky Krumlov, population 14,000, is a small town located in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The town is well known for its architecture, old town, and castle.
Cesky Krumlov, located on the horseshoe shaped Vltava River, began construction of its town and castle in the 13th century, which was located on an important trade route in Bohemia. Throughout its history, the town and castle have been owned by the House of Rosenberg, House of Eggenberg, and the House of Schwarzenberg.
During World War 2, the town was controlled by Nazi Germany until it was freed by the American Army and returned to Czechoslovakia. Cesky Krumlov fell into disrepair during the Communist era. In 1989, the Velvet Revolution of the Czech Republic brought new life, and repairs, to the town making it a popular and beautiful tourist destination.
The large castle, seen on the left, towers over the town. It dates back to the 1200's, and was built by the Witigone's. In 1992, Cesky Krumlov Castle was added to UNESCO World Heritage sites list.
