Half Dome In Yosemite National Park
The iconic Half Dome rock formation seen towering over Yosemite Valley in California's Yosemite National Park.
Half Dome, originally known as Cleft Rock by local native Indians, is a famous granite dome rock formation that rises up 4,737 feet above the valley floor to an elevation of 8,836 feet.
At a time, ascents of Half Dome were considered impossible. It was not until October 1875, when climber George Anderson first reached the summit by a trail he created. In 1957, a group of climbers became the first to summit Half Dome by climbing the vertical face. The grade VI ascent took 5 days. Today, there are multiple routes to reach the summit of Half Dome, including a popular and relatively easy 8.6 mile cable route that is used by up to 800 people a day.
